I have been a student of Competitive Engineering for over a year and have had an opportunity to apply concepts of SQC and Evo in several live project situations. Here are some observations I wanted to share with other practitioners.

· Two of the project situations required fire fighting and rapid resolution of project pain points. We were able to get excellent results, though it was not a case of applying the concepts in early stages of a client engagement, which is the scenario envisaged in CE. I will be glad to share more details with anybody who is interested.

· I have been interested in extending CE techniques to include a suitable mathematical model. This should help in gaining a better understanding of the significant interactions between the various quality / system attributes, in developing what if scenarios, and perhaps in certain types of prediction as well. Presently, CE addresses decomposition and quantification, both very powerful techniques. Considering practices from other traditional engineering domains, it would be logical to extend CE into the domain of model building.
· There is a need to integrate CE concepts into more “orthodox” frameworks, such as CMMi, and I believe Tom has already done some work on this aspect recently. This is most important in driving adoption of CE techniques by large software development companies, such as those in India, many with headcounts in excess of 20,000.
· Another need which I see is that of developing a suite of tools which will facilitate usage of CE techniques in very large project teams.
